How many people can say they’ve ridden at five Paralympic Games? Lauren Barwick, born in Langley in 1977 and listed by the Canadian Paralympic Committee as living in Aldergrove, is one of them.

How she came to the sport

Wikipedia describes a working life around horses before her injury, including a job with a business that supplied horses to film shoots. A barn accident in 2000 left her paralysed from the waist down. She went back to the horses, this time in para dressage, where she competed in Grade II and later Grade III.

Five Games

Games Best result

Results from the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s athlete page.

Between Games she won freestyle silver and individual bronze in Grade II at the 2014 World Equestrian Games, and the FEI had her ranked first in the world in para dressage in May 2014. The CPC also lists team gold at the 2017 World Para-Reining International Championships, a different discipline altogether.

Honours and odd jobs

She has been named Equine Canada’s equestrian of the year and was a torchbearer before the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. She was inducted into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame in 2015. Fans of CBC’s Heartland may have seen her without knowing it: Wikipedia says she appeared on the show as a stunt double.
