When he was an atom-aged player, Shea Theodore was offered a spot with the Burnaby Winter Club, one of the best-known youth programs in the province. He said no. According to the Langley Advance Times, he stayed in Aldergrove, playing with the friends he grew up with at a rink two minutes from home, right through bantam. Aldergrove Minor Hockey still calls him its own.

The road out of Aldergrove

After Aldergrove he played midget for the Fraser Valley Bruins and represented BC at the 2011 Canada Winter Games. The Seattle Thunderbirds picked him in the third round of the 2010 WHL bantam draft, and by 2013-14 he led all WHL defencemen in scoring. In 2014-15 he wore the captain’s C and was named the league’s top defenceman.

Anaheim drafted him 26th overall in 2013. He broke into the NHL with the Ducks in December 2015, and in June 2017 Vegas acquired him as part of an expansion-draft arrangement with Anaheim. He’s been a Golden Knight ever since, and signed a seven-year extension in October 2024 that runs through 2031-32.

The Cup comes to Aldergrove

Every Stanley Cup winner gets a day with the trophy, and Theodore brought his home. NHL.com’s story from August 2023 describes him carrying the Cup out of the family house and calling across the street to a neighbour who wanted a photo. The same story said a public autograph session was planned at the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre. He’d been at that building before: the Advance Times says he came back for its opening in 2018.

He also started a fund in 2021, Kay’s Power Play, to make mammograms easier to get; the Advance Times says it is named for his grandmother.
