Danielle Lawrie was pitching for Canada at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the same summer her younger brother Brett played there for the baseball team. Thirteen years later she won the game that gave Canada an Olympic softball medal.

Brookswood to Seattle

Lawrie grew up in Langley and pitched for Brookswood Secondary, where Wikipedia says the team won three league titles with her. She then went to the University of Washington, the first Canadian on the Huskies’ softball roster.

Her college record:

  • 2009 Women’s College World Series champion with Washington, and the tournament’s most outstanding player
  • USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year in 2009 and again in 2010
  • Two Honda Sports Awards for softball

The photo above is from October 2010, when Seattle City Council presented her with a proclamation for her University of Washington career.

Pro and international

She played professionally for the USSSA Pride from 2010 to 2014, was an all-star in 2011 and won two league championships (2013 and 2014), then pitched for the Canadian Wild in 2019.

For Canada she won Pan American Games silver in 2007 and 2019 and world championship bronze in 2010 and 2018, according to the Canadian Olympic Committee. At Beijing 2008 Canada finished fourth. At Tokyo, played in 2021, Canada won bronze, and Wikipedia credits her with the win in the bronze-medal game.

These days she works as a sports commentator. Olympic.ca lists her residence as Everett, Washington.
