When CBC caught up with Tyler Joe Miller in March 2025, he had just come home from Nashville, stopped in Aldergrove to pick up some baby chicks, and was fixing an old chicken coop on his Langley property. That week he was headed to the Junos in Vancouver, nominated for country album of the year against, among others, his Langley neighbour Dallas Smith.
That’s a fair summary of the whole story, really. Miller grew up in Surrey and, until about 2019, worked as a carpenter and house painter. He still bills himself on his own site as a Surrey artist. He lives in Langley.
A fast start
His first single, “Pillow Talkin’,” came out on Christmas Day 2019. It went to No. 1 at Canadian country radio and later went gold, and Wikipedia says he was the first independently signed artist to top the Billboard Canada Country chart with a debut. The follow-up, “I Would Be Over Me Too,” went to No. 1 as well, making him (by his own site’s count) the first independent Canadian country act to get there with his first two singles.
The rest came quickly:
- 2020. Debut EP, Sometimes I Don’t, But Sometimes I Do, in November.
- 2021. Wins SiriusXM’s Top of the Country competition.
- 2022. “Wild as Her,” and “Never Met a Beer” with Matt Lang.
- 2023. The full-length Spillin’ My Truth in August, nominated for a Juno the next spring. He also headlined Gone Country on July 22 with The Reklaws, the first year the Langley twins’ cancer fundraiser passed a million dollars ($1,007,000, by their count).
- 2024. Signs with RLive for management and The Orchard for distribution, and releases the Going Home EP in October through his own company.
- 2025. Going Home is up for country album at the Junos in Vancouver and album of the year at the CCMAs in Kelowna.
- 2026. “Under the Influence” spends seven weeks in the national country Top 10, and the CCMAs nominate him for male artist of the year and fans’ choice.
His official site counts ten Top 10 singles at Canadian country radio so far. His latest release is “Blue Collar.”
Awards close to home
The BC Country Music Association noticed him early. Wikipedia lists the Ray McCauley Horizon Award for new talent in 2019; male artist and single of the year (“Pillow Talkin’”) in 2020; and in 2022 album, single and songwriter of the year. The CCMAs have nominated him every year since 2020.
Off stage
Wikipedia says Miller runs The Climb Outreach Society, a non-profit working on housing, clean water, emergency food and newborn care in Central and South America. We couldn’t find a charity filing to confirm the details, so we’re leaving it at that.
