Lean, medium or fatty? Our standing order at Estrella's

House-smoked brisket on rye, a serious poutine and a family behind the counter since 2001. What to order, what it costs and when it's open.

Lean, medium or fatty. That’s the only real decision at Estrella’s, and our answer is medium: enough fat to keep it juicy, not so much that you need a nap.

The brisket is smoked in-house over hickory and sliced to order, then stacked on organic light rye with a smear of mustard. The regular is a proper lunch. The large is the one people take photos of. Add a kosher dill on the side.

Then there’s the poutine. Fresh-cut fries, squeaky curds, their own gravy, and for a few dollars more a handful of chopped smoked meat on top. We order it as a side and regret nothing. If someone at the table wants something lighter, the Italian salad with their own balsamic is a good one, and the Turkey Red Pepper panini holds its own.

It’s a small room in an industrial strip on 200 Street, run by the same couple who opened it in 2001, and it feels like it. Nothing fancy, nothing rushed. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday and shuts at 5, so plan around a Monday craving.

If you love it, the counter sells smoked meat to take home, right down to whole briskets.

Go if you’ve ever stood in line on Saint-Laurent, or always wanted to. Skip if you’re looking for dinner; they’re a lunch place.
