Despite the name, you won’t find many car parts here. Princess Auto started in Winnipeg in 1933 as a wrecking yard selling parts and war surplus, and what it sells now is closer to a farm-and-shop store: air tools and compressors, hand tools, welding and metal fabrication gear, hydraulics, trailer and truck parts, outdoor power equipment, and a surplus section that’s worth a look every time.

That surplus aisle is our favourite wander. You go in for a hitch pin and come out with a box of something you didn’t know existed and now definitely need.

It’s a chain, a privately owned Canadian one with more than 55 stores, and it has been in B.C. since 1981, so this is a short note rather than a Shop Local feature. The company’s “Royal Service” promise says no sale is final until you’re satisfied, and they’ll repair, replace or refund. Worth knowing on a tool that dies early.

It’s also practically next door to Toy Traders, which makes one stop on the Bypass work for the whole family.

Go if you build, fix or tow things. Skip if you need actual car parts; try an auto parts store instead.
