The first thing you notice at Zythos on a weekday lunch is that you’re not the only one who had the idea. The room was busy, properly busy, and that tells you something about a place that has been on Telegraph Trail since around 2009. It isn’t fancy and doesn’t try to be. It feels like one of those restaurants a neighbourhood quietly depends on.
The calamari: 9 out of 10
Order it. It was the highlight of the meal and the reason we’ll be back: delicious, and the dish we’d tell a friend not to skip. It comes as a starter for $18 or as a full plate with all the sides for $22.
The lamb souvlaki: 7 out of 10
Good, honest lamb skewers. Not the most memorable thing on the table, but nothing wrong with them either. Like all the Greek mains, it arrives as a full plate with rice, a roast potato, a Greek salad and tzatziki, so nobody leaves hungry.
Lunch now, dinner next
As a lunch spot, it’s a really solid one: quick to like, easy to recommend, and close to the highway if you’re passing through Walnut Grove. We’re curious about the dinner menu next, and we’ll report back when we’ve been. Note that Saturday is dinner-only and Sundays are closed.
Go if you want a reliable, no-fuss Greek lunch, and especially if you like calamari. Skip if you’re after a fancy night out; this is a comfortable everyday place, not a special-occasion room.
