Zythos has been feeding Walnut Grove Greek food from its spot on Telegraph Trail for a long time; the company behind it was registered in 2009. It’s a proper sit-down room with white tablecloths and red shutters on the walls, and it has the feel of a real neighbourhood staple: on a weekday lunch, the place is busy.

The menu

It’s the Greek taverna lineup, done in full. Souvlaki is the backbone: chicken, lamb, beef or prawn skewers, and every Greek main comes as a complete plate with rice, a roast potato, a Greek salad and tzatziki. Around them sit the classics: roast lamb shoulder, lamb chops, moussaka, keftethes (Greek meatballs), dolmathes, spanakopita and donairs. Starters include saganaki (pan-fried cheese, with a hot-honey version), garlic prawns, prawn uvetsi baked with feta, and fried calamari.

There’s an Italian side of the menu too, for anyone at the table who wants baked lasagna or fettuccine alfredo, and a short grill list with a New York steak, schnitzels and ribs.

At lunch, most Greek plates land between $20 and $27; calamari is $18 as a starter or $22 as a full plate.

Feeding a group

Zythos does take-out family specials (souvlaki dinners, roast lamb or baked pasta with Caesar salads, $38 to $70), free delivery within 5 km, a catering menu and a private room for events. Parties of six or more get an automatic 18% gratuity, so budget for that.
