Two weeks after election day, the new Township of Langley council officially takes over. The Township posted the agenda for Monday’s inaugural meeting this afternoon, and if you’ve never been to one, it’s a good one to start with: no zoning fights, no budget charts, just the handover.

What happens, in order
O Canada. Sung by a student from the Langley Community Music School.
The oath. A provincial court judge swears in the mayor-elect and all eight councillors-elect. Under BC’s Community Charter nobody can take their seat until they’ve taken the oath of office, so this is the moment the new term actually starts.
The new mayor takes the chair. The meeting then acknowledges the traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples.
Acting mayor rotation. The one real vote of the night. Council sets who fills in when the mayor is away, and the agenda proposes sharing it evenly: every councillor gets three months, twice over the four-year term, starting with Councillor Kunst until January 31. The full schedule is on our Township council page.
Inaugural comments and the mayor’s address. Each councillor gets a chance to say a few words, then the mayor gives the inaugural address. This is usually where you hear what the new council wants to focus on first.
Then the real work
The Township’s first regular council meeting is Monday, November 16 at 1:30 pm, with a public hearing slot at 7:00 pm, followed by November 30 and December 14. That’s where bylaws, development applications and, before long, the 2027 budget show up. Our guide to how to attend or speak at council covers delegations and public hearings.
The City is the same night
Langley City’s new council is sworn in at the same time, 7:00 pm Monday, in Council Chambers at City Hall. If you live in the City, that’s your meeting; not sure which Langley you’re in? Here’s how to tell. Both start times are worth checking on the day, and more on how a new term begins is in after the election: the first council meetings.
