How our Shop Local listings work
Hey Langley's Shop Local directory is how we point neighbours toward independent Langley businesses. It's free, nobody pays to be in it, and we want it to be something you can trust. Here's how it works, including the less fun part: what happens when someone has a concern.
Getting listed
- It's free, always. No one pays to be listed, featured, ranked or removed. We don't sell ads, sponsored posts or "premium" spots, and we don't accept free stuff from businesses.
- We choose who's in it. Shop Local is an editorial directory, not a phone book. Every listing is researched and approved by a person before it goes up, whether the business asked to be listed or we found it ourselves. Asking doesn't guarantee a spot.
- Independent and Langley first. We feature independently owned businesses in Langley City and the Township, including local owners who run a franchise. Big national chains don't get features.
- We check before it goes up. That means confirming the business is real, open, local, and in good standing, and looking for any serious problems on the public record.
- A listing isn't a guarantee. Being on Hey Langley means we think a place is worth knowing about. It isn't a promise about every visit, product or price, and it isn't a substitute for your own judgment.
Keeping it fresh
- Every listing is re-confirmed once a year. The owner gets a one-click "still open?" email. If it isn't confirmed, the listing comes down until it is.
- Readers help. Every profile has an "I was there, it's open" button and a "Something wrong?" form for closures, moves and wrong details. We fix what we can confirm.
- Recommendations are positive only. You can recommend a place. There's no thumbs-down button, and we don't publish negative reviews.
If you have a concern about a business
- Tell us privately. Use the "Something wrong?" form on the business's profile. A person reads every report.
- Your report stays private. We never pass your name, email or message to the business, and we don't publish reports.
- One report doesn't remove a listing. Everyone has the odd bad day, and not every complaint is what it seems. We log every concern and watch for a pattern.
- A pattern gets a closer look. If several different people raise concerns, or something serious shows up on the public record (a health closure, regulator action, a court ruling, criminal charges in the news), we take another look. While we do, we may take the listing down.
- We don't take sides in disputes. We aren't a complaints service and can't settle a disagreement between you and a business. These are the places that can:
- The business itself, first. Most problems get fixed fastest that way.
- Consumer Protection BC, for consumer protection issues and the industries it licenses.
- BC's Civil Resolution Tribunal, for small claims up to $5,000.
- The Better Business Bureau, to file a public complaint.
- Fraser Health, for food safety and health inspection concerns.
- The police non-emergency line for anything criminal, or 911 in an emergency.
Removing a listing
- We can add, pause or remove any listing at any time, at our discretion. That includes when a business no longer fits what Shop Local is for.
- We do it quietly. When a listing comes down, we don't post why or make any statement about the business. A listing disappearing is not an accusation, and nobody should read it as one.
- Businesses can always ask. An owner can ask us to correct their listing or take it down at any time. Email [email protected].
- Second chances happen. A listing that came down can come back once the reason for it is resolved.
- The same rules for everyone. No exceptions for anyone, whoever they know.
