Brae Island is a short hop from the village of Fort Langley and flat enough for almost anyone. Floodplain forest, river viewpoints and a lot of birds (Metro Vancouver mentions beavers, raptors and great horned owls) make it a good one for an easy afternoon.
Trails
- Tavistock Point Trail: 4.2 km return, about 1.5 hours. Level, with a firm crushed-rock or gravel surface, through floodplain forest to river viewpoints.
- Fort-to-Fort Trail: 7 km return heading west to Derby Reach, about 2 hours, mostly flat. Derby Reach is 3.5 km away by this trail.
- Fort Langley to Glen Valley: an 18 km flat route, about an hour by bike, according to the brochure.
Cycling is not allowed on pedestrian-only shoreline trails. See our Derby Reach page for the other end of the Fort-to-Fort Trail.
Camping
Fort Camping runs the campground on the island. Metro Vancouver’s page says it’s open year round with tent, RV and group sites, and that booking is required. Fires are allowed only in the fire rings at campsites, and seasonal restrictions may apply. The brochure doesn’t list camping prices, so check fortcamping.com.
Good to know
Swimming isn’t recommended because of swift currents and changing water quality, and the page asks you to keep off the log booms along the shoreline. Fishing needs a tidal sport fishing licence. No liquor or cannabis, and smoking is limited to signed areas. The park brochure notes that sand digging once damaged the riverbanks, and staff and volunteers have replanted them, so please leave the banks alone.
Nearby: Fort Langley National Historic Site. More walks are in our hikes guide, and the off-leash page covers dogs at Derby Reach.
