Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in Fort Langley

For about ten days in April 2021, Fort Langley was Green Hills, Montana: a fake coffee shop on Glover Road, the Community Hall as town hall, a tank in the street and Jim Carrey on a crane.

In April 2021, people walking down Glover Road ran into a tank. One resident told Vancouver Is Awesome the set “looks like a military invasion,” helicopter and all. For about a week and a half, Fort Langley was Green Hills, Montana, Sonic’s adopted small town, and Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik came back to cause trouble.

What they built

Red Energy Films, the production company, started work in late March. It put up facades and made small temporary changes to the streetscape around Glover Road and Mary Avenue. Most of the action centred on a temporary facade at the corner of a temporary public park built for the shoot. On screen it’s the Mean Bean, the coffee shop where Robotnik and Knuckles turn up in the trailer. The tracker at Hollywood North Buzz confirmed the café was built on Glover Road.

The Community Hall, the cream building with white columns, was dressed as Green Hills Town Hall. People on social media were quick to point out it had been Storybrooke’s town hall in Once Upon a Time.

What the village saw

The scenes called for military vehicles, including a tank, masked soldiers with prop machine guns, piles of fake broken pavement, and Carrey dangling from a crane for a stunt. The paper also ran a story headlined “Fort’s rainbow crosswalk covered up for filming.”

The street is a busy one, and the shops stayed in business. Katie Rempel, who owns Rempel Mercantile across from the set, told the paper she was a fan of the filming. She said it created local jobs and that the crew kept nearby businesses informed.

Then there was the car. Around the end of filming, Carrey held a raffle for the crew, and a grip won a Chevy Blazer RS, a thank-you the Advance Times put at just over $40,000. We don’t know whether the winner lives in Langley.

Then and now

The film reached theatres in April 2022. The facades came down after the shoot, so there’s no Mean Bean to visit, but the Community Hall is right where it was on Glover Road. Stand across the street and you’ve got the Green Hills shot. The Hall is a working community hall, so be respectful if there’s an event on.
