Election signs: when they come down and where they go

Township local-election signs had to be gone by October 21, City signs by October 24, provincial signs can stay to October 28, and there is a recycling drop-off until November 2.

The local election was October 17. The signs were supposed to follow it out the door. Here is what each Langley says, where old signs can go, and what to do if one is still standing on your corner.

Township of Langley

The Township’s Election and Political Signs Bylaw (No. 6118) sets a window for local-election signs. For 2026 that was 9 am on September 26 to the end of the day on October 21. The Township’s own reminder put it plainly: signs for mayor, councillor and school trustee had to be down by Wednesday night, or the owner could face a fine. The Township’s page says it may issue warnings, remove signs, or fine for repeated violations. We did not find a dollar amount published.

Signs on public property were never allowed in the Township. Signs on private property needed the consent of the owner, occupant or strata.

City of Langley

The City runs its own rules under Sign Bylaw 2125. Its election page says signs could go up from 4:01 pm on September 11, 2026, and must come down no later than 4:30 pm on October 24, 2026. So a City sign still up this week is fine until Saturday afternoon. The City’s page does not mention a recycling option.

Provincial signs are on a different clock

There is also a provincial election underway, with voting on October 24. The Township treats those signs separately: it says provincial campaign signs may stay up from September 22 until the end of the day on October 28, 2026. If you see a sign for an MLA candidate this weekend, that is allowed.

Where to take old signs

The Township is running a sign drop-off station for recycling the materials. It is at the Township site at 20570 102B Avenue, open 9 am to 4 pm, from October 19 to November 2, 2026. The Township asks you to call Bylaw Enforcement at 604-532-7551 before you head over. Signs do not go in the blue box. If you cannot make the drop-off days, the Township says they can go in your garbage bin.

Candidates whose signs were pulled by the Township for a bylaw problem can get them back. Removed signs are stored at the same address, and can be collected weekdays, 9 am to 4 pm, until November 2. Call first and an officer will open the storage area. Signs left unclaimed become Township property and may be destroyed.

Reporting one that is still up

In the Township, use the online Report an Election Sign Use Complaint form, email [email protected], or call 604-532-7551. In the City, after Saturday’s deadline, the general Request for Service route works. Both are on our Report a problem page.
