Fort Langley National Historic Site in the off-season: what's open, and the pass math

Kids get in free, parking is free for four hours, and the blacksmith works in the cold. We did the Parks Canada pass arithmetic so you don't have to.

Bastions and upper gallery (conservation work)

Summer at the Fort is school groups and tour buses. November is the same buildings and the same interpreters with a tenth of the crowd.

What’s open when it’s cold

Everything inside the walls runs year-round: the storehouse, the Big House, the cooperage, the Métis bateau exhibit, and the forge. Parks Canada doesn’t post a winter demo schedule, so call ahead to find out which days the blacksmith is at the anvil and go on one of them — it’s the memory most visitors leave with. The one thing you can’t do this year is climb the bastions; they’re closed for conservation work, and small kids will notice. There’s a toddler play corner with soft flooring for the ones who’ve had enough history. Most people spend an hour to an hour and a half.

The pass math

Kids are free, so a family with two adults pays $20 a visit. Twice a year is $40. The family Discovery Pass is $167.50 and covers more than 80 national parks and sites for twelve months, so it only earns its keep if a Banff, Jasper or Pacific Rim trip is in the same year. The Fort’s own annual adult pass is $24.50 — it beats day admission on the third visit, not the second. For most Langley families: pay at the gate.

The parking trick

The lot at the end of Mavis is a pay lot, but it’s free for four hours if you register your plate at the Visitor Centre after you buy admission. Easy to miss, and the ticket isn’t.

We’ll go on a blacksmith day in November and score it. This page gets the number when we have it.
