Hot & Toasty: a Salt Lane lunch we're already planning to repeat

A small downtown Langley City cafe doing paninis, crepes and soup. We went for a weekday lunch, it was busy, the food came fast, and the crepe stole the show.

Salt Lane is easy to drive straight past, which might be why Hot & Toasty still feels like a bit of a find. It’s a narrow, bright little cafe with a hand-lettered chalkboard menu, plants on every flat surface and a couple of wire chairs out front for the brave in November. We went on a Wednesday around noon and it was busy, the good kind: every table taken, a steady line, and food still landing in front of us within a few minutes of ordering.

What we ate

The ham and cheese panini ($10) is the kind of thing that’s easy to get wrong and they don’t. Thick seeded bread pressed until it’s properly crisp, plenty of ham, cheese melted right through, an orange slice on the side. For ten dollars it’s a real lunch, not a snack.

The cheese BLT ($12) came on the same pressed bread with crisp bacon, a good slab of tomato and a lot of lettuce, cut in half and skewered. It held together, which is more than most BLTs manage.

Then the crepe. The chocolate, strawberry and banana sweet crepe ($13.50) is folded into a neat square, dusted with icing sugar, striped with chocolate and served with a swirl of whipped cream. We split it and there was a short negotiation over the last piece. If you only order one thing here, order that.

The room

It’s small, so a group of six would need to time it. Counter service, order at the till, and the staff were quick and friendly without fuss. The chalkboard covers it: all-day breakfast paninis and crepes, sandwiches and wraps, a couple of soups, salads, and a wall of hot and iced drinks.

When to go

They’re done at 3:30 on weekdays and 2 pm on Mondays, so this is a breakfast and lunch place, not a dinner one. Weekday lunch was busy but moved; if you want a quiet table, aim for mid-morning.

Go if you want a quick, good-value lunch downtown and have room for a crepe. Skip if you’re after a big dinner or a lingering evening; they’ll be closed.
