Houston Trail, Derby Reach: a forest loop with a view of Langley Bog

The 4 km forest loop in Derby Reach Regional Park, with rolling hills, a few steep pitches and views toward Langley Bog, and a plain note on what you can and cannot see of the bog.

Is there a bog platform? Not one we can confirm. Metro Vancouver’s park page says the Houston Trail gives views toward Langley Bog, and also says the bog itself is not currently open to the public for safety reasons. So think of this as a forest walk that looks across at a bog, not a boardwalk into one. If the bog’s status changes, that page is where it will say so.

What the walk is like

Trails BC describes the loop as an easy and pleasant walk that borders a large peat marsh, part of it a very large cranberry farm, with heritage farm buildings along the way. Metro Vancouver is blunter about the ground: rolling, with pitches up to 23 percent. Wear shoes with some grip, particularly after rain, and expect horses. Metro Vancouver’s brochure puts the loop at about 70 minutes.

The trail is part of the historic Fort-to-Fort route, so you can fold it into a longer day. The Fort-to-Fort Trail page covers the flat riverside side of the same park.

Rules and wildlife

  • Dogs must be under control at all times. The park has both on-leash and leash-optional areas, so follow the signs.
  • Pick up after your dog.
  • Fires are only allowed in designated fire rings, and restrictions can apply in dry weather.
  • Bears, cougars and coyotes pass through the park from time to time.
  • Metro Vancouver’s page does not state a bike rule for this trail; our Derby Reach page lists the Houston Trail for walkers and horse riders only, so leave the bike at the riverfront.
