Township of Langley: Fort Langley

Fort Langley is the one most people picture: a small village with old buildings, a river, a campground, a fur-trade fort, and a main street (Glover Road) that fills up on festival weekends. It’s part of the Township, not the City; our City vs. Township explainer clears that up. The Township calls it the birthplace of British Columbia.

The fort

The Hudson’s Bay Company post is now a national historic site run by Parks Canada, with historic buildings, costumed interpreters, hands-on demonstrations and overnight oTENTik stays inside the walls. Our Fort Langley National Historic Site page has more. Parks Canada notes the bastions and upper gallery were closed for preventative conservation when we checked, so look at its page before you plan a visit.

The museum and library

The old Langley Centennial Museum at 9135 King Street closed on September 30, 2022. Its collections moved across the street to salishan Place by the River, a 40,000 sq ft arts, culture and heritage centre that opened on February 8, 2025. The Township says the museum is opening in phases. The Fort Langley Library is on the first floor. There’s also a coffee shop, a gift shop, an Indigenous Garden and an outdoor amphitheatre.

The village and the river

The Township’s 2019 profile describes boutiques, antique shops, galleries, restaurants, cafes and brew-tasting houses in the core. Heritage buildings include the CN Station and the Community Hall. The Langley Rowing and Paddling Centre is on the river. The profile also names the Kwantlen First Nation’s tourism offerings, including storyteller-led walking tours.

Brae Island, Bedford Channel and Derby Reach

Brae Island Regional Park is on McMillan Island, with its entrance about 120 metres past the Jacob Haldi Bridge on the west side of Glover Road. Its 4.2 km Tavistock Point Trail has viewpoints over Bedford Channel and the Fraser River, and the Fort Camping campground is open year-round (booking required). The 7 km Fort-to-Fort Trail runs to Derby Reach Regional Park, where Metro Vancouver says the original fort was built in 1827 before moving to its present site in 1839.

Cranberry Festival

The Fort Langley Cranberry Festival is held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Tourism Langley says the 31st edition was on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 10 am to 4 pm, filling the village core along Glover Road with more than 125 vendors, and a Lions Club pancake breakfast starting at 8 am. The Township posted road closures on Glover Road between Francis and Mavis Avenues. Next year’s date will be posted on our events page.

Schools

Fort Langley Elementary is at 8877 Bartlett Street.

Getting there

Take the Trans-Canada Highway and Glover Road, or use TransLink’s trip planner for buses. On festival days the road is closed and parking fills early, so give yourself extra time.
