Langley does not have an arts district. What it has instead is a theatre in Brookswood, a Shakespeare company that performs in parks, a ukulele group that tours the world, a bluegrass night in a 19th-century church, a dozen painters who show in the old Fort Langley library, and a camera club that has been meeting since before the Township had a mall. None of it is in one place, which is exactly why this page exists. Pick a thread and pull.
Theatre
- Langley Little Theatre — the community company in the 80-seat Langley Playhouse on 200 Street: a four-show season, a July festival of new plays, classes and open auditions.
- Bard in the Valley — free outdoor Shakespeare every summer, performed by volunteers in Langley parks.
- Theatre in the Country — dinner theatre on Glover Road: a plated meal, then a family-friendly musical at your table.
- PLAY Society — youth musical theatre that fills the Chief Sepass stage with big Broadway-licensed shows.
- Chief Sepass Theatre — the 300-seat theatre inside Langley Fine Arts School in Fort Langley, where most of Langley’s touring and school productions land.
Music
- Langley Community Music School — lessons from babies to seniors since 1969, plus concerts in its own hall on 207 Street.
- Langley Ukulele Ensemble — the touring youth ukulele group that has carried Langley’s name around the world since 1981.
- Langley’s community choirs — four places to sing without an audition or a music degree.
- Valley Bluegrass Music Society — Friday-night bluegrass and weekly jams in the St. Andrew’s hall, Fort Langley.
- Fort Langley Ceilidh — a monthly Thursday kitchen party of Maritime music, $10 at the door.
Visual arts
- Langley Arts Council — the umbrella arts organisation and the Walkway Gallery at the Timms Community Centre.
- Fort Gallery — the Fraser Valley’s only artist-run centre, now a travelling gallery that pops up around Fort Langley.
- Fort Langley Artists Group — a dozen Township painters and makers with an annual fall show at the Community Hall.
- Aldergrove Art Club — a Wednesday-afternoon painting circle at the Heritage Hall on 273 Street.
- Downtown Langley Mural Walk — thirty-two murals in a loop you can walk in an hour, plus the City’s public-art programs.
- Langley Quilters’ Guild — 130-plus quilters, a monthly meeting at George Preston and a biennial show.
- Langley Camera Club — photography outings, competitions and Wednesday-night meetings since about 1961.
Dance
- Swing and social dancing in Langley — Alder Groove Swing on Fridays in Aldergrove, Rock Step’s first-Friday socials at Murrayville Hall, and the Valley Promenaders’ square dancing.
Heritage and culture
- salishan Place by the River — Fort Langley’s new three-storey arts, culture and heritage centre: the museum, the library, a 167-seat theatre and a print studio.
- Langley Centennial Museum — the Township museum’s collection and exhibits, now housed at salishan Place.
- Langley Heritage Society — the volunteers who have been saving Langley’s old buildings since 1979, including the Fort Langley CN Station.
- Langley City’s arts nights — the Village Café Series, the Langley City Film Festival and Light Up the City.
Missing something?
Almost certainly. Langley has dance schools, a Fine Arts School, open-mic nights, writers’ groups and church concert series we have not written up yet. If you run one, or go to one we should know about, tell us and we will add a page.
