You can dance in Langley three nights out of seven without a partner, without experience and without spending more than a ten-dollar bill. That surprised us. Here is how the week shakes out.

Fridays in Aldergrove: Alder Groove Swing

The hall at 3015 273 Street has a few names. The Aldergrove Star’s calendar calls it the OAP Heritage Hall; the club’s own site just gives the address. Whatever you call it, most Friday nights it fills with East Coast swing.

The club writes its name as Alder Groove (the pun is deliberate, and so is the web address: aldergrooveswing.com, with the extra o). Its site describes itself as the newest swing venue in the area and lays out the format plainly: a beginner lesson from 7:30 to 8:15pm, then open floor until 10:30pm. During the lesson, leads and follows rotate so everyone dances with everyone; you can stay with the person you came with if you would rather. After that, you ask anyone. The Star’s listing puts the door price at $10 and says all levels are welcome.

One wrinkle to know before you drive out: the club’s site says it skips the first Friday of the month. That night belongs to the other swing crowd, in Murrayville.

First Fridays in Murrayville: Rock Step

Rock Step Swing Dance Society is a Langley non-profit that, in its own words, uses swing dance for mental health and well-being. When the Aldergrove Star covered its launch in January 2023, the plan was a monthly social called Swing Shift on the first Friday of each month at Murrayville Community Memorial Hall, and that is still the pattern.

The next one listed is a Back to the '50s sock hop on Friday, November 6, 2026. Doors at 7pm, a free beginner lesson from 7:30 to 8:10, social dancing from 8:30 to 10:30pm, $10 online or $15 at the door. The events page even solves the parking question: if the hall lot is full, there is free public parking near the roundabout at 216 Street and Old Yale Road.

Rock Step also runs eight-week courses at Timms Community Centre in Langley City, from six-count swing for complete beginners up to Lindy Hop, at $160 per adult for a session. Registration includes entry to the monthly socials. The fall 2026 courses are full; watch the classes page for the next intake.

Thursdays in Aldergrove: the Valley Promenaders

Back at 3015 273 Street, Thursday evenings are for modern square dance. The Valley Promenaders are listed in the Star’s calendar from 6:45 to 8:30pm, no experience necessary. We have not found a website for the group; the calendar listing has the contact for reservations, and we would call ahead the first time to confirm the season is running.

Which one first?

If you have never danced a step, any of the three will teach you from zero. Rock Step’s first-Friday social is the gentlest entry because the lesson is built for a room full of beginners once a month. Alder Groove is the one to pick if you want to go every week and build on it. The Promenaders are a different thing entirely: square dance is called, so you listen and move rather than lead or follow, which some people find easier.

Nearby

Both Aldergrove halls sit in the village core; our Aldergrove guide covers the rest of the street. Murrayville Hall is on 48 Avenue at the historic five corners, see the Murrayville guide. Rock Step’s classes are at Timms Community Centre. More regular music and dance nights land on our events list.
