Township of Langley: Aldergrove

Aldergrove is the Township’s eastern town, with its own downtown along Fraser Highway, a big community centre, a regional park with an Ice Age boulder, and a border crossing just to the south. It has a small-town feel with farmland close by.

What it’s known for

The Township’s profile mentions small businesses along Fraser Highway: cafes, restaurants, specialty stores, health care offices, salons, and hardware and garden stores. It describes the area as walkable. Annual events listed by the Township include Aldergrove Fair Days, the Langley Good Times Cruise-in, an artisan market, a Polar Bear Plunge and a Christmas light-up parade. The profile also names the Greater Vancouver Zoo and the Twilight Drive-In Theatre.

Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre

When it opened to the public in 2018, the Township described a six-lane 25-metre pool with a diving end, a leisure pool and hot tub under a canopy, plus a 500-seat arena with an NHL-sized ice surface, a fitness centre and an indoor running track. The Otter Co-op Outdoor Experience is the outdoor water park, with waterslides, a tidal pool, a current channel and an aquaplay area. Check the Township’s site for hours and what’s open in each season.

Aldergrove Regional Park

Metro Vancouver’s park sits in the Township and Abbotsford. It was shaped by glaciers, and later gravel extraction, then restored. The Big Rock on the east side was left behind by the last Ice Age about 12,000 years ago. There are views of the Cascades and Mount Baker, and trails include the 3.5 km Pepin Brook loop. There’s an off-leash dog area, a children’s Nature Discovery Area, and an equestrian trailhead at 272 Street and 6 Avenue. Gates generally open at 7 am.

A short history

The Alder Grove Heritage Society shares a 1912 photo of downtown looking east along the Westminster to Yale Wagon Road. The Aldergrove Fair is said to have started in 1912, according to the Aldergrove Star, with a women’s foot race on what is now 272 Street. The society runs the community museum, hosts a free Community Heritage Day, and is digitizing the Aldergrove Star (1957-2000).

Schools

The Langley School District’s list includes Aldergrove Community Secondary (26850 - 29 Avenue), Parkside Centennial Elementary (3300 - 270 Street) and Shortreed Elementary (27330 - 28 Avenue). Check the school locator for catchments.

Getting there and the border

The Township’s profile says Aldergrove is easy to reach from the Trans-Canada Highway and the Lynden US border crossing. Border hours and wait times change, so check the CBSA border wait times page before you go. For buses, TransLink’s trip planner shows current routes.
