The Royal Canadian Legion is best known for the poppy, but a branch is also a neighbourhood hall with a lounge, a kitchen and a calendar of events. Two branches have shaped Langley: Branch 21 in Langley City and Branch 265 in Aldergrove. Only one of them is open today, so here is the lay of the land.
Aldergrove Branch 265
Branch 265 is at 26607 Fraser Highway and owns its building, according to a 2022 Aldergrove Star story. That story describes a licensed lounge with karaoke, live bands, stand-up comedy and darts, plus help for veterans applying to Veterans Affairs Canada and a buddy coffee program where veterans can talk with peers. It also says the branch raised and donated more than $47,000 in 2021 for youth, seniors, hospitals and other charities.
A January 2023 story adds that anyone can join, not just veterans, and that the branch had brought back its Friday bingo, meat draws and a Sunday breakfast. Those details were current for that story and may have changed, so call the office before planning around them. The branch’s own website is named in the 2022 story, but we could not open it, so we rely on the news reports here and on the phone numbers they printed.
What happened to Branch 21
Branch 21 stood on 56 Avenue in Langley City. The Aldergrove Star reported in 2019 that it closed in 2018, and that the Legion reassigned its territory to the Aldergrove and Cloverdale branches. Veterans Affairs Canada’s memorial inventory also notes the 2018 closing. The 2019 story notes that Remembrance Day ceremonies continued in some neighbourhoods (see below).
Poppy campaign areas
The 2019 story spelled out who covers which streets for poppy trays and wreaths. Aldergrove Branch 265 covers east of 216 Street to Mount Lehman Road, from the border to the river, plus the area north of the Trans-Canada Highway from 216 Street west to 196 Street. Its fundraising also reaches Murrayville, Walnut Grove and Fort Langley. Cloverdale Branch 6 covers west of 216 Street to 152 Street, between the border and the freeway. The Legion’s poppy funds support veterans and their families. If your business wants a poppy tray, the branch office is the place to ask.
Remembrance Day in Langley
- Langley City. The City’s notice for 2025 listed a ceremony on November 11 at the Douglas Park cenotaph, 20550 Douglas Crescent, starting at 10:55 am. Douglas Crescent and Park Avenue were closed to traffic from 6:30 am to 1 pm, and parking was at Timms Community Centre. The City announced it, and it mentions the Legion’s poppy campaign. Watch the City’s site for this year’s notice. See also the Langley City guide.
- Aldergrove. The Alder Grove Heritage Society listed a 2025 service at Branch 265 on November 11. A 2016 Advance Times story described a parade down Fraser Highway to the cenotaph in front of the branch, two minutes of silence at 11 am, and wreaths laid by community groups. That is how it went that year, so confirm the current schedule with the branch.
Remembrance Day is on November 11 every year. Our events page will carry dates when they are confirmed.
