- Township of Langley: Brookswood-Fernridge
Brookswood and Fernridge are the leafy part of the Township. The Township’s own page says the area is noted for its abundance of parkland, trees, natural spaces and conservation areas, and it’s mostly single-family homes. If you like a walk under tall trees without leaving town, this is a good corner to know.
Parks and trails
An older Township parks map (dated June 2014) names these in the area: Noel Booth Community Park, Bell Park, Brookswood Park, East Brookswood Park, Zazulak Park, Langley Passive Park, and the Wiser and Rees-Callard Natural Parks. Trails include the Fernridge Trail and the Noel Booth Trail, and the map also shows the BMX track and skateboard park. Campbell Valley Regional Park, with its boardwalks and 20 km Perimeter Trail, is nearby too; see our Rural Langley guide.
George Preston Recreation Centre
The centre at 20699 - 42 Avenue has an ice arena, the Langley Curling Centre, a main hall that can be rented, an outdoor sports box and a patio. The Township’s page also lists a steakhouse and a pub on site. The Langley Rivermen play junior hockey here; see the Rivermen page for games. The Township’s neighbourhood page also lists a BMX bike track and a skateboard park in the area.
Library and shops
Brookswood Library is at 20045 - 40 Avenue. The Township says the area has an array of shopping opportunities; its neighbourhood page doesn’t name specific shopping areas, so we won’t either.
A bit of history
The Langley Heritage Society tells how the V.V.&E. Railway, a Great Northern subsidiary, looped through the 40th Avenue area in the early 1900s because direct grades were too steep. Several sawmills operated along the line, including one called Fern Ridge Lumber. The railway was abandoned in the late 1920s. A trestle remnant is still linked to the line on 40th Avenue.
Schools
The Langley School District’s list includes Brookswood Secondary (20902 - 37A Avenue), Noel Booth Elementary (20202 - 35 Avenue), Belmont Elementary (20390 - 40 Avenue), Alice Brown Elementary (20011 - 44 Avenue) and Glenwood Elementary (20785 - 24 Avenue). The Township’s map also shows Langley Fundamental Middle/Secondary School. Check the district’s school locator for catchments.
Getting there
The Township’s neighbourhood page doesn’t list transit, so use TransLink’s trip planner for current bus routes.
