- Township of Langley: Murrayville
Murrayville is where a lot of everyday Langley happens. The Township’s profile counts about 10,000 residents and a handful of big institutions in one place: the hospital, the RCMP main detachment, the Langley School District offices, the W.C. Blair Recreation Centre and the Langley Regional Airport.
Five Corners and the old village
Murrayville is known for its five-way intersection, Five Corners. The Township’s profile says it was first called Murray’s Corner and describes it as the second area of the Township to grow into a distinct community. Historic Old Yale Road runs through it. The Murrayville Community Hall dates to 1928, and several heritage buildings now house coffee shops, a bakery and a bed and breakfast.
A bit more history
The Langley Heritage Society explains that the V.V.&E. Railway, which zig-zagged across the Old Yale Wagon Road and crossed Murray Creek several times, passed near here until it was abandoned in the late 1920s. It was nicknamed “Molasses Limited,” because the trip was slow.
Parks and recreation
W.C. Blair Recreation Centre has a swimming pool, a wave pool and a gym; it’s one of the Township’s three pools. McLeod Athletic Park has a full-size running track with a grandstand, plus football, soccer and baseball fields, and the Township says it hosts regional, provincial and national tournaments. The profile also mentions natural spaces and trails.
Hospital and services
Langley Memorial Hospital, in Murrayville, is a community hospital in the Fraser Health region with 24/7 emergency care, maternity, pediatrics, surgery, diagnostic imaging and a pharmacy. Other services listed by the Township: the Murrayville (Main) RCMP Detachment at 22180 - 48A Avenue and Fire Hall 6 at 22170 - 50 Avenue. The School District office is at 4875 - 222 Street.
Shopping and food
The Township describes several plazas with restaurants, pubs, ice cream shops, pharmacies, coffee shops, a farm-fresh produce market and health care offices.
Airport
Langley Regional Airport is in Murrayville. The Township says about 50 aviation businesses are based there and it’s among Canada’s busiest general aviation airports.
Schools
The Langley School District lists many schools; the one we can place for certain is James Hill Elementary at 22144 Old Yale Road. The district office has the full school list and catchment maps.
Getting there
The profile says Murrayville has easy access to commuter routes. Check TransLink’s trip planner for buses. On Fraser Highway you’ll find the recreation centre and hospital close together.
