You can’t miss it: a yellow building on Aldergrove’s main drag with a giant pink donut on the roof.

The family behind it

The Hive is an Aldergrove family business, and the family were all born and raised in Langley and Aldergrove. On the shop’s Our Story page, the mother tells how she and her husband Chris spent years seeking out donut and dessert shops on their travels and daydreaming about one of their own. The timing lined up when their son Riley was finishing his Red Seal chef training. Riley and Chris went off to donut school, and then, with Chris heading toward retirement, Riley and his mom took it on. The company was incorporated in June 2022.

What to get

Donuts are made fresh each morning and come in four families: simple ones (plain, glazed or cinnamon sugar), classic dipped-and-sprinkled rings, “royal” donuts that are filled, nutty or fancier, and big fruit-packed fritters, which the shop calls one of its best sellers. Donut holes (“donut dots”) are sold singly or by the baker’s dozen. When a day’s batch doesn’t sell out, the leftovers go on sale at a discount the next day.

At lunch, Riley’s training shows. Tuesday to Saturday the kitchen runs smash burgers: Riley’s Single with bacon onion jam, a French onion dip burger with gruyere and a side of gravy, a breakfast-style one with a fried egg and ranchero hollandaise, and a few more, plus fries, potato rings and poutine. Coffee runs from drip to lattes and London fogs.

Good to know

They do sell out on busy days, so come early or order ahead online. The shop gives back a lot: school breakfast programs, youth sports, LAPS, Cops for Cancer and Aldergrove Legion events are on their list, and they take part in Aldergrove Business Association events like neighbourhood trick-or-treating. Now and then they bring out a Back to the Future DeLorean for people to sit in and take photos with.
