The neon comes on, the lanes glow, and somebody’s eight-year-old bowls a better game than you. That’s a Saturday at Alder Alley, where it’s Glowbowl from noon until close.
This place has been on Fraser Highway in Aldergrove since 1962, built by a local couple who were tired of driving to Abbotsford to bowl. It’s now the only bowling alley in the City or the Township, and walking in feels a bit like stepping back a few decades, in a good way: red diner stools, a checkerboard floor, a vintage car mounted on the wall.
Five-pin is the friendly version of the game. The balls fit in one hand and there are no finger holes, so little kids and grandparents can play on the same lane. At $7 a game, a family can bowl for an evening without wincing, and the $40-an-hour lane deal is the better value for a group of five or six.
It does birthday parties too: $300 gets four lanes for two hours and the dining area, and you bring the cake.
One thing to plan around: public hours are limited because the leagues own several weeknights. Book a lane ahead online or by phone, especially for Saturdays.
Go if you want an old-fashioned, cheap night out that works for every age. Skip if you’re hoping to drop in on a Wednesday; it’s league night.
