This is a small page because the Aldergrove Art Club is a small, un-fussy thing, and almost everything we know about it comes from the Langley Advance Times. The weekly listing is plain: everyone welcome, Wednesdays from one to four at the Heritage Hall on 273 Street, to practise, socialise and help each other along.

The paper’s longer profile fills in the rest. The club goes back to around 1969, when the first meetings were held in a member’s home near 248 Street and Fraser Highway, and it has met at the hall for most of the years since. Membership has hovered around two dozen. Any medium goes; past members have brought bead work and fabric art as well as paint. There is a coffee break, with members taking turns on snacks, and a habit of wandering the room to see what everyone else is up to. In summer the group heads outdoors to paint, often in members’ gardens. You do not have to live in Aldergrove and you do not have to be retired. The club shows work at the Bradner Flower Show each year, and has talked about bringing back the shows it used to run during the year. There is a modest annual fee, plus an optional hall membership that covers insurance; the amounts in the profile are old enough that we would ask rather than repeat them.

The hall itself is worth a word. It opened as the Aldergrove OAP Hall in 1960 in a former provincial highways works yard, and in 2022 the pensioners’ branch and the art club agreed on a new name, Heritage Hall, because too many people driving past thought the building was empty.

If you want to try a Wednesday, call one of the numbers in the Advance Times listing first; a one-line calendar entry is the club’s only public notice board.
