The Langley Community Music School, or LCMS, is a non-profit registered charity. Its site says its programs are for students of all ages and levels, from babies through to seniors and from beginner to pre-professional, and that music should be accessible to everyone.
What you can study
The LCMS programs page lists:
- Private lessons
- Early learning and Suzuki: Music for Children from before birth to age 6, and the Suzuki program from age 3 and up
- Group classes and adult classes
- Ensembles: string ensembles, chamber music, the LCMS Choir and the LCMS Jazz Ensemble
- Summer programs and a music intensive program
- Master classes and workshops
- Cascade Peaks ChamberFest
- Teacher training
The school says students can work toward Royal Conservatory of Music levels, prepare for university music studies, or brush up on skills. As a charity it also offers scholarship and bursary programs. The page doesn’t list fees, ages for most programs or the specific instruments taught, so call the school before you register.
Concerts
LCMS holds recitals and concerts, including professional concerts and student events. Check the concerts and events pages on its site for current dates, and our events page for other local listings.
A little history
The Canadian Encyclopedia says the school opened in 1969 in the Langley Arts Centre and was incorporated as a non-profit society in 1972. It later grew to several buildings, and the City of Langley now owns them, providing land, utilities and maintenance. The Encyclopedia describes it as the third largest community music school in BC, with enrolment above 800 by 2005. The City’s arts page also lists it among the arts groups in Langley and says it was founded in 1969.
Registering
Use the Register page on the LCMS site. Students sign in through the student portal. Questions go to the phone number or email above. The school’s contact page also covers hiring performers and employment.
