Langley is two municipalities, and your dog’s rules depend on which one you live in. If you are not sure, our guide to the City versus the Township helps. The Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS) also says to call 604-857-5055 before buying a licence online if you are unsure.
Dog licences
Both municipalities require an annual licence, valid for a calendar year, and both limit a household to two dogs, per the LAPS licence page. The age at which a dog needs a licence differs: the LAPS page says 4 months in the Township and 6 months in the City.
Township of Langley (fees as listed on the Township page): the regular annual fee is $70 for a dog that has not been spayed or neutered and $40 for one that has. If you pay on or before February 1, the discounted rates are $60 and $30. Seniors (65 and over) pay $45 and $30 regular, or $35 and $20 discounted. A replacement tag is $10, a transfer is $15, and a service dog is $10 with supporting documents. You can apply or manage an account through MyTownship, pay by card online, or pay in person at Customer Service in the Civic Facility, 20338 65 Avenue, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.
City of Langley (fees as listed on the City page): $39 on or before February 1 ($50 after) for a spayed or neutered dog, and $78 ($100 after) for a dog that has not been. Seniors pay $22 and $39 on or before February 1. A replacement tag is $10. You can renew online, by cheque, or at the Corporate Services counter at City Hall, 20399 Douglas Crescent. The page notes a $200 fine for an unlicensed dog.
Fees change, so use the two official pages above for the current numbers.
Lost pet? Start here
LAPS says you can file a lost report online and browse found-animal listings for cats and dogs. A licence tag helps a lot: the Township page says lost dogs are reunited with owners through the registration and tag. If your dog is impounded in the Township, the Township page lists reclaim fees that start at $55 for a first impound of a licensed dog, plus $24 a day for upkeep; unlicensed dogs cost more.
Who does animal control?
This has been changing. In September 2025 the Township announced it was preparing to take animal control in-house while keeping the shelter running. On December 16, 2025 it announced a ten-year agreement with LAPS: LAPS continues to shelter animals at the Patti Dale Animal Shelter, and the Township takes over animal control. The announcement said start dates and transition details would follow. Check the Township’s site for the current arrangement before you call. The City’s page does not name a department for animal control and points to its bylaw enforcement page for non-emergency issues.
In an emergency, call 911. Barking, a stray or a neighbour’s loose dog is a non-emergency matter. For problems with roads, parks and other things, see our report a problem page.
