The brief is one line long: “Fort Langley 1827–2027 | Past, Present and Future.” The association says you don’t have to paint a fort or a fur trader; abstract, contemporary and imaginative entries are all welcome, and it notes that the history of this land and river goes back long before 1827 and that the anniversary means different things to different communities.
The practical bits, from the call for artists: the banners are vertical, about 32 inches wide by 60.75 inches high, so sketch in portrait. Send an image of the design, a short note on how it fits the theme, and your contact details, and read the full guidelines PDF on that page first for the technical requirements. Entries are judged in December, the artist is named in January, and the banners go up in February 2027 ahead of BC Heritage Week. The chosen design may get the official bicentennial branding added later, in consultation with the artist.
The association has done this before: its current welcome banners came out of a 2024 contest that drew more than 20 local artists, with the winning design by Langley artist Jungmin Ko carrying Kwantlen welcome phrases in both the Upriver and Downriver dialects. This time the association is paying for and running the project with the Fort Langley Bicentennial Committee.
