A giant Roman-numeral clock hangs over the shampoo bowls at Black Orchid, and the counter under it is lined with the bottles they sell. The salon sits in the McBurney Lane courtyard off Fraser Highway, tucked in among other small downtown businesses.
From a studio space to the courtyard
Cristina Chambers and Shelly Sturmey opened Black Orchid in 2008 in a small studio on Fraser Highway. It grew for nearly eight years there before they moved into McBurney Lane in March 2016. They say they’ve worked together in the trade for more than 15 years. Their team page now lists around a dozen stylists, ranked by level, plus a front-desk crew, and the homepage says they’re looking to add more.
What you can book
Cuts (including barbered cuts), colour, balayage, special-occasion styling, tape-in hair extensions and a keratin smoothing treatment they describe as formaldehyde-free. Colour work uses Davines and Redken, and the stylists are described as certified balayage specialists.
How the prices work
Price depends on the stylist’s level, so the same service costs a bit more as you move up. On their price list, a haircut and style ran from $71 to $101, and a barbered cut from $45 to $57. Colour is “starting at”: a root touch-up from $92, all-over colour from $122, toner extra. Tape-in extensions start at $135 for the smallest 12-inch option. Prices were current when we looked on Oct 31, 2026.
Two practical things. For extensions and special-occasion styling, they ask you to book a free consultation first. For colour changes, there’s an online consultation form where you upload a photo of your hair now and the look you’re after. Their site also sells non-refundable appointment deposits ($30 to $100), so ask when you book whether you’ll need one.
The shelves
You don’t have to book a chair to shop. They carry Davines, K18 and, new this fall, Maria Nila, a Swedish line the studio says is 100% vegan. You can prepay in their online shop and pick up at the salon. The footer of their site also says they belong to Green Circle Salons, a program that recovers salon waste.
Book online or call 604-533-0195. They’re open Monday to Thursday 8:30 am to 9 pm, Friday until 7, Saturday 9 to 5.
