Langley is farm country, and 4-H is how a lot of its kids learn what that means up close: raising a calf, training a dog, keeping a rabbit healthy, and then showing what they learned at the club’s Achievement Day. The four H’s stand for head, heart, hands and health.

The four Langley clubs

Langley Beef 4-H Club. Beef projects.

Woodlands 4-H Club. Dogs, sheep, horses, veterinary science and rabbits.

Glen Valley 4-H Club. Cloverbuds for the youngest members, then dogs, goats, rabbits, outdoor living and photography, so you don’t need a barn to belong.

Otter Flying Feathers 4-H Club. 4-H BC’s page for the club doesn’t list its projects at the moment; ask the District Key Leader what’s on offer this year.

Clubs don’t publish their meeting places. Families get in touch with the Langley District Key Leader, whose contact is on each club’s page at 4hbc.ca, and go from there.

A little history

4-H in British Columbia began in 1914 with more than 200 young people and a single project: potatoes. Poultry followed later that year. The clubs were called Boys and Girls Clubs until 1952, when they took the 4-H name. Today almost 3,000 young people aged 6 to 21 belong across the province, and horse, beef and sheep are the most popular projects.

How to join

New members can join any time, and returning members re-enrol from December 31 each year. Contact the District Key Leader first, choose a club and a project, then apply online through 4-H BC. The annual fee is $125, and clubs can add their own.
