What is it? A small winery on 232 Street, south of 32 Avenue. It’s been making wine since 2009, from grapes grown on site plus fruit from elsewhere in the Fraser Valley and the South Okanagan. Everything is BC VQA: reds, whites, rosé and traditional-method sparkling.

What’s it known for? The bubbles, mostly. Backyard makes its sparkling the Champagne way, with the second fermentation in the bottle; the Blanc de Noirs Brut is the one to ask about. If you want to see how it’s done, it runs a Bubble Tour & Tasting. The reds have done well too: see the awards below.

Do I need to book? Not for a couple or a small group: walk in any day it’s open. Six or more, call ahead. Its two web pages list slightly different hours, so if you’re cutting it close on a Friday or Saturday evening, phone first.

Can I eat there? Charcuterie platters, plus wine by the glass if you’d rather sit than taste. There’s a gazebo outside.

Anything on besides tastings? An events calendar with trivia nights and workshops; October 2026 had a pumpkin floral-arrangement class. It also hosts private events, and runs a wine club, the Back Porch Wine Club.

Who owns it

The winery’s site doesn’t name its owners. The last published name we found is from 2013, when the BC wine-industry site Orchard and Vine named Trent Blackwell as Backyard’s owner. A 2012 Miss604 write-up shows Blackwell running Neck of the Woods Winery at the same address, so Backyard is the same vineyard under a new name. We’ll update this if the winery tells us more.

Awards and recognition

The winery’s awards page lists a gold for its 2020 Reserve Syrah at the 2023 WineAlign National Wine Awards of Canada. The same year brought silvers for the 2020 Cabernet Merlot, 2020 Syrah and 2021 Reserve Viognier, plus several bronzes.

Not drinking? The winery doesn’t list anything non-alcoholic, but the charcuterie and the gazebo make it an easy stop to ride along on.

Nearby: Manners Cider is a few minutes south off 232 Street on 20 Avenue (reservation only), and Campbell Valley Regional Park is close by for a walk.
