#105 – 8860 201 Street, Langley, BC, V2Y 0C8Walnut Grove, Carvolth business area (Township)
If you’ve lived in Langley a while, you probably still think of Dead Frog as an Aldergrove brewery. It isn’t anymore. Here’s how it got to Walnut Grove.
A short timeline
- 1998: Backwoods Brewing starts in a warehouse in Aldergrove, across from the Twilight Drive-In (BC Ale Trail).
- 2006: Backwoods becomes Dead Frog. Some sources give 2007 as the first year Dead Frog beer was sold.
- 2018: The brewery leaves Aldergrove for a new building in the Carvolth business area in Walnut Grove, near the 200 Street interchange. It has a 90-seat tasting room and a patio.
- Today: It’s still family-run. The brewery names Derrick Smith as CEO and Cole Smith as brewmaster, and says the taps pour beer brewed about 55 feet from where you sit.
Who owns it
Dead Frog belongs to Derrick and Donna Smith. The brewery’s own story says they built it as well as own and run it. They ran the business as Backwoods for close to ten years in Aldergrove before putting the frog on the label. In 2018 the Smith family and the Dead Frog team moved together into the Walnut Grove building, with the tasting room and patio about fifty feet from the tanks.
What it’s known for
Dark beers, mostly. Nutty Uncle, a peanut butter stout, is the one people ask about. Commander, an imperial stout, keeps winning medals, especially the aged “Reserve” vintages. There’s also a long-running sour series and an easy brown ale called Classic. The brewery prints ingredient lists on its labels.
The tasting room hosts plenty of events: live music, bingo, trivia, a Halloween party and an annual Christmas market. In May 2026 the Langley Advance Times covered a lager launch there, Rolling Barrage, brewed in support of people who serve.
