In Devil in Ohio, hospital psychiatrist Dr. Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel) takes in Mae (Madeleine Arthur), a teenager who has escaped from a cult, and her family pays for it. The show is set in small-town Ohio. Some of that small town is Langley.
The Mathis family’s project house. Windermere Farms, the estate Suzanne’s husband Peter is restoring and hoping to sell, keeps coming back throughout the series. Netflix says the real house is on Telegraph Trail, the heritage-designated route through north Langley. The trail follows the line of the 1865 overland telegraph, the first in Western Canada, built during the race to wire North America to Europe. The project was abandoned, but the trail stayed in use and was one of Langley’s main roads until Old Yale Road was started in 1872. The house is a private home, so we’re leaving it at that.
The department store. In episode two, Suzanne takes Mae shopping after their meeting about foster care. That’s Otter Co-op in Aldergrove, which has been operating for more than 100 years and is very much open, so this is the stop you can actually make.
The harvest dance. At the end of episode seven, Mae goes missing from the harvest dance while the cult’s Malachi Dodd performs a ritual in preparation for her return to Amon County. That was filmed on the Jamestown set at MacInnes Farms, the same western town When Calls the Heart uses as Hope Valley. The set is private farmland; the farm’s brewery, Locality Brewing, is the public way in.
The Langley Advance Times reported in September 2022, when Netflix added the show to its location site, that the series filmed in Surrey and Delta as well as Langley.
