If you live in Langley and watched Supernatural, there’s a decent chance you’ve bought gas at a Gas-N-Sip. The show’s all-purpose convenience store, where the Winchesters fill up the Impala and buy questionable snacks, was played by at least three different Langley stations over the years.
Supernatural followed brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) across America in a 1967 Chevy Impala, hunting ghosts, demons and worse. It ran for fifteen seasons, from 2005 to 2020, and was made in BC the whole time. Most of that was Vancouver and the North Shore, but Langley’s back roads and small-town streets turned up more than once.
Here’s what we can place, with the episode each scene ended up in.
1. “The Things They Carried” (season 10, episode 15)
Filmed January 8, 2015 · Aired March 18, 2015
A foggy morning in Fort Langley. Dean and the Impala filmed a quick scene outside the Fort Langley Community Hall, then the crew moved Baby across to the next set: a Husky station on Glover Road, dressed as a Gas-N-Sip. The station’s food store was used for daytime interiors, and after dark Sam and Dean shot their scenes at the pumps.
On screen, it’s the episode where Cole, a hunter played by Travis Aaron Wade, asks the brothers for help with an army buddy.
2. “Baby” (season 11, episode 4)
Filmed August 11, 2015 · Aired October 28, 2015
The one fans still talk about: an entire episode shot from the point of view of the Impala. Part of it was filmed at a gas station in Brookswood in south Langley, a Race Trak at the time, dressed again as a Gas-N-Sip. In the episode, the brothers pull in, Sam heads inside, and Dean is left in the car with something in the back seat.
Hollywood North Buzz watched Padalecki rehearse a stunt there in which Sam fires at someone stealing Baby and the rear window shatters. Ackles had already wrapped for the day. Langley got the Impala’s own episode, which seems fair.
3. “Let the Good Times Roll” (season 13 finale)
Filmed April 13 to 17, 2018 · Aired May 17, 2018
Two Langley locations for one finale.
- A gas station that never existed. On Friday the 13th, the crew finished a gas station it had built from scratch on an empty lot in north Langley, near Allard Crescent, and called it George’s Gas & Go. Sam, Dean and Castiel are inside when the archangel Michael arrives from the alternate “Apocalypse World.” By the following Monday afternoon the set was mostly gone.
- The flat cap. On Monday night, April 16, Ackles did take after take of a well-dressed 1920s-looking gentleman walking towards the camera down a Fort Langley side street. Fans spent the night guessing who he was. It turned out to be the season’s cliffhanger: Michael wearing Dean as a vessel.
We don’t know which side street, so we won’t send you to anyone’s front gate.
4. “Drag Me Away (From You)” (season 15, episode 16)
Filmed February 2020 · Aired October 22, 2020
In one of the last episodes ever made, the brothers go back to Rooster’s Sunrise Motel, where they worked one of their first cases as kids. The motel is the West Country Hotel in Langley, used for three days of filming in February 2020. Flashback scenes of young Sam and Dean were shot there too.
What we couldn’t confirm
Fan lists online put Supernatural on Mavis Avenue, Church Street and at Marina Park in Fort Langley. We couldn’t find a reliable report of any of those, and the Church Street and Marina Park shoots we did find were Riverdale. If you know an episode that used them and where it was reported, tell us.
Seeing it today
The easy one is Fort Langley. Stand across Glover Road from the Community Hall and you’re looking at the same view as the January 2015 shoot, minus the fog (on a good day). The hall is busy for other reasons, too: it was Storybrooke Town Hall and Riverdale’s town hall in the same years.
The gas stations are working businesses, or were; please don’t stage photo shoots at the pumps. The north Langley set is long gone, and the motel is private property.
