Cedar Rim is the kind of nursery where you go in for a flat of perennials and come out debating whether a 12-foot tree will fit in the truck. It’s a garden centre and a growing operation in one, on Glover Road in Milner, and much of what’s on the benches is grown on site.

The family behind it

Russ and Trudy Bruce started Cedar Rim in 1978 as a wholesale nursery. When the early-1980s recession hit, they opened the gates to retail customers too, and the shop side kept growing until the business moved to its bigger Glover Road property. Their kids work in the business now. In 2019 it shared the national Outstanding Retail Achievement award at the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association’s landscape excellence awards.

What you’ll find

  • Trees and shrubs grown at the Langley nursery, including large specimen trees and established landscape plants
  • Fruit trees, roses and Japanese maples. The widest fruit-tree selection usually lands in late March and early April; roses start arriving in March
  • Perennials and annuals in season, plus bulk soils and bark in the yard
  • An indoor plant shop with houseplants and a good succulent table
  • Cedar Rim branded hand tools, like their transplanting trowel

The online shop only shows part of the stock, so it’s worth walking the rows. Bring their branded nursery pots back and they’ll reuse them.

Workshops and giving back

Cedar Rim runs a calendar of seasonal planting workshops and a gift-card fundraiser that returns part of the sales to schools, sports teams and community groups. Their workshop list this fall even included a cat-adoption day with a local rescue.

Before you go

Hours are Monday to Saturday 9 to 5 and Sunday 10 to 5. Call 604-888-4491 if you’re after something specific. If you’re buying for the Township’s tree program, Cedar Rim is the Langley nursery that takes the voucher; we’ve explained how the $350 tree voucher works.
