Clearview is a greenhouse shop with a growing operation behind it, which is why the clematis selection is the thing people talk about. The family has been growing plants on this corner of 56 Avenue for more than half a century, and the public shop is where a lot of that stock ends up.

Five generations of growers

Fred and Sidney Wein, together with Gladys and Charlie Barron, started Clearview Horticulture Products as a wholesale nursery in 1970 at 264 Street and 56 Avenue. Charlie brought a specialist’s knowledge of clematis, and that’s still the shop’s calling card. Later generations of the Wein family joined the business, and in 2008 they opened Clearview Garden Shop so people could buy straight from the growers. Today it trades as Clearview Country Market, with the same family and a wider shop.

What’s in the greenhouse

  • Clematis and other climbing and flowering vines, grown in the family’s own nursery
  • Hanging baskets and planted patio containers, the big draw in spring and early summer
  • Annuals, perennials, soils and gardening tools
  • Pet food and supplies, from kibble to cat food, on the shelves year-round
  • Seasonal produce

Plants and baskets follow the seasons, but the shop itself is open all year.

Neighbourly touches

In late summer the market holds a customer-appreciation day with local makers and family activities; this year’s second edition featured a corgi race. It’s the kind of place where you can pick up dog food and a flat of pansies in one stop.
