A big piece of Willoughby that used to be a construction site now has kids running around on it. Smith Athletic Park is the Township of Langley’s newer soccer campus, and it is still growing. Here is where it stands, going by the Township’s own project page.

What’s open

Phase one is done. The Township says it includes three synthetic turf fields, shelters for players and officials, spectator seating and a grandstand, parking, change rooms, public washrooms, a concession, more than 100 trees, a playground, picnic tables and new trail connections. The three fields officially opened on September 6, 2025. The Langley Advance Times reported that Langley United Soccer Association is the operator, which fits with our Langley United Soccer page.

What’s still being built

Phase two is an indoor synthetic soccer field and training facility, with change rooms, public washrooms, a concession and training spaces. As of the Township’s May 19, 2026 update, the building’s wood arch roof was under construction and exterior cladding was expected to start in summer 2026. The page gives no completion or opening date, so we don’t either.

Cost and approvals

The Township lists the project value as $129.95 million. Council approved funding for phase one on July 25, 2024, and for phase two on January 16, 2025. An earlier Township news item on phase one described $60 million of funding covering access roads, utilities and site work along with the three fields, a dog park and a playground, and said the money would come from Community Amenity Contributions and Development Cost Charges. Earlier news coverage has used other total figures at other stages, so check the project page for the current number.

The neighbours

The site sits beside the planned Smith Middle and Smith Secondary schools. The Province’s project page lists the secondary school (grades 9 to 12, 1,900 spaces, $203 million) as under construction, with occupancy planned for fall 2027.

The new ice and dry-floor arenas are a separate project at the Langley Events Centre, not at this park. See the arena expansion. For the full list, see major projects in the Langleys.
