What’s cask ale, anyway? It’s beer that finishes conditioning in the cask and is pulled up by hand with a beer engine, the tall handles you see in English pubs, rather than pushed out with gas. It pours softer and less fizzy, and it’s served a little warmer. Smugglers’ Trail built its brewery around the idea and runs seven beer engines.

Who owns it

Two longtime rugby teammates, Jamie Overgaard and Stephen Gregorig, started the company in 2017 and still own it. By their own account they disagree on plenty, but they both agreed Langley needed more beer, The beers are meant to recall the British ales of the past, with a West Coast twist. They contract-brewed at first, then opened their own brewery and kitchen in Walnut Grove in 2020. Two years later the BC Beer Awards named them Rookie of the Year. In February 2024 they opened Trails End in Fort Langley’s Bedford Landing, a café, taproom and bistro that opens for breakfast coffee. Neither the company nor Tourism Langley says Trails End brews on site, so we treat it as a second taproom.
