21152 16 Avenue, Langley, BCSouth Langley (Township)
For years the line on Fraser Valley wine was that the serious bottles came from the Okanagan and the Valley made the easy-drinking stuff. In November 2025 a sparkling wine grown on 16 Avenue in South Langley put a dent in that.
The 2025 Wine of the Year
At the 2025 BC Wine Awards, Township 7’s 2017 seven stars SIRIUS Late Disgorged was named Wine of the Year. It’s a traditional-method sparkling wine made from grapes off the South Langley estate. The Penticton Herald reported that more than 300 wines were entered, and the winery says it’s the first time the top honour went to a wine from outside the Okanagan.
“Late disgorged” means the wine sat on its yeast in the bottle for years before the sediment was removed and the bottle was finished, the same slow route used for vintage Champagne. A 2017 vintage winning in 2025 tells you how long that takes.
The South Langley vineyard
Township 7 started here in 2000. The name goes back to the old “7th Township” name for this part of South Langley. The winery’s own pages put the start at 2000; Tourism Langley’s listing says 2001.
The Langley vineyard is small, about five acres, and the winery says it’s dry-farmed, meaning no irrigation. It grows Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the two classic Champagne grapes, and most of it goes into the seven stars sparkling wines. The cottage on the property is an original building from the 1930s.
Who owns it
Township 7 was founded by Gwen and Corey Coleman, a couple from the Prairies with business backgrounds. According to a 2006 Georgia Straight profile, a trip to California in 1989 got them thinking about a winery, and Corey worked at Tinhorn Creek and Hawthorne Mountain in the Okanagan before they started their own. They planted the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in South Langley, opened the Langley winery, then added the Naramata Bench winery in 2003.
In 2006 Vancouver-born restaurateur Mike Raffan and his associate John Tietzen bought both estates. According to a 2018 Montecristo Magazine story, Ge Song, a Beijing-based owner, bought the winery in 2014 and paid for upgrades and the purchase of the Blue Terrace Vineyard in Oliver, while the Raffans stayed on to run it. Today the winery’s own site simply calls itself family-owned.
Township 7 also has a second winery on the Naramata Bench near Penticton and vineyards in the Okanagan, so plenty of what’s poured in the Langley tasting room is Okanagan wine. If you want the local fruit specifically, ask for the seven stars sparkling.
Visiting
The tasting room is open 11 am to 6 pm. The winery recommends booking a tasting, and takes drop-ins when there’s room. Through the year it also runs ticketed tasting experiences, and the October 2026 calendar included a Riedel glassware tasting (sold out) and a red wine and charcuterie session. There’s a wine club, clubSEVEN, with its own events.
There’s no kitchen, but you’re welcome to bring a picnic. In summer, Bard in the Valley stages its ticketed Shakespeare run on the grounds; that run helps pay for the company’s by-donation shows in Douglas Park.
Two more tasting rooms are a short walk or drive along the same road. Festina Lente, the meadery, is just west on 16 Avenue, and The Fraser Valley Cider Company is about 2 km east.
Awards and recognition
- 2025 BC Wine Awards, Wine of the Year: 2017 seven stars SIRIUS Late Disgorged, South Langley estate fruit. Penticton Herald
- 2026 National Wine Awards of Canada, Top 10 B.C. Wineries: four gold, four silver and three bronze medals. The golds were all Okanagan wines: 2022 Benchmark Series Reserve 7, 2022 Reserve Cabernet Franc (Raju Vineyard), 2023 Seven Stars Rigel Fool’s Gold and 2022 Infinity. WineAlign
- 2026 National Wine Awards of Canada, Top 10 Small Wineries: the same medal haul, including silver for the 2017 Seven Stars Sirius LD from the Fraser Valley. WineAlign
The winery keeps a longer list on its accolades page.
Not drinking? The winery doesn’t list non-alcoholic options, so a picnic on the grounds is the way to come along. Summer’s Shakespeare is the best excuse for the non-drinkers in a group.
