JJ Bakes is a family bakery café with a giraffe in it. The Walnut Grove shop is dark-walled and full of hanging plants, with a tall giraffe sculpture by the counter, and it’s a nice place to sit with a drink and something purple.
What they’re known for
- Ube Baby! cupcakes: ube and macapuno with a halaya filling and taro cream cheese frosting
- Paradise Bouqcakes: cupcakes piped into buttercream flower bouquets, popular as gifts

Some items are vegan or gluten-free, but the kitchen isn’t certified allergen-free, so ask if that matters for you.
The family
The bakery is women-owned and family-run. Kelsey, Jennifer and Kaitlyn started it in 2020. Their recipes come from their mother’s kitchen and from the Filipino and Slovak sides of the family, which explains why ube shows up next to more traditional bakes. The café opened in June 2023. There’s now a counter in White Rock too, but Walnut Grove is the main café and where custom cakes are picked up.
Hours and ordering
Hours are 9 to 7 Sunday to Wednesday and 9 to 9 Thursday to Saturday. Their own site disagrees on Sunday (7 pm on one page, 8 on another), so call 604-260-2160 if you’re cutting it close. For a custom cake, get in touch at least a week ahead through the website or at [email protected].
