The pitch at Markeyda’s is one pet, one hour. Each dog or cat gets a single 60-minute slot, and bigger dogs get more than one groomer working on them at once so the clock still holds. The shop says that keeps it quiet, keeps kennel time to almost nothing, and means animals never meet each other while they wait. They don’t sedate pets.

How a visit goes

  1. Call first for a price. Cost depends on breed, coat type and how short you want it, so they quote by phone (604-530-0518). For a firmer number they’ll look at your pet in person.
  2. Book and be on time. Phone or message the shop on Facebook. There’s a 15-minute grace period, and after that you may be rebooked.
  3. The standard groom is a full haircut, bath, blow-dry, nail clip and ear cleaning, with ear plucking if you ask.
  4. Pick-up comes around the hour mark. E-transfers are accepted.

Older or nervous pets

Ask about the senior groom. It does only what’s needed to get the pet clean and comfortable and skips extras that stress them out, the blow dryer included. They say hard-to-handle pets and ones with age or injury issues are welcome.

Quick jobs

Nail clipping is $15, a Dremel finish is $5, and ear cleaning or plucking is $5 (included in a full groom). Walk-ins for nails are taken, but calling ahead saves a wasted trip. They also welcome small animals, so ask if yours isn’t a dog or cat.

Before you book

  • Their site says they’re currently being selective with dogs over 70 lb, handled case by case, so call before assuming a spot for a big one.
  • Matting or a heavy undercoat that turns up on arrival can add to the price.
  • A no-show is charged the full cost of the missed groom, due at your next visit.
