Florence Hogg founded Valley Natural Health in 1964. She also hosted nutrition programmes on the radio and taught vegetarian cooking classes, and in 1989 the Canadian Health Food Association named her its Woman of the Year. The shop has changed hands since then, and today Li-Ping Liang owns it, on Douglas Crescent.

It’s a small shop with very full shelves. The bulk herb selection alone runs past 70 varieties. Beyond that:

  • vitamins, minerals and supplements, from brands like Natural Factors, Flora, New Roots and A.Vogel
  • pantry staples: grains, beans, pasta and dried fruit
  • herbal teas, honey and oils
  • natural cosmetics and household cleaners

Reviewers mostly talk about the service: someone takes the time to walk you through the supplement shelves and actually knows the stock. Their online catalogue is still being built, so it won’t show everything in the store.

Getting there: There’s free street parking on Douglas Crescent and more on the side streets. It’s open Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 5:30 and closed Sunday. Call 604-534-2512.

The Creative Bookworm and All Of Oils are a few doors along the same street. The Langley City guide covers the rest of downtown.
