- Province's overview
- Adult upgrading (gov.bc.ca)
1. Finish or add high school courses: Langley Education Centre
The Langley School District’s adult education page lists courses toward the BC Secondary School Graduation (the regular Dogwood), courses toward the BC Adult Graduation (the Adult Dogwood), and literacy courses in English, math, social studies and introduction to computers. They run out of the Langley Education Centre at 21405A 56 Avenue.
The centre’s own page highlights math courses and a Literacy Foundations program in English language learning, and says registration for Winter Session 2027 structured classes opens November 3, 2026. The pages we read give no fees, eligibility rules or office hours, so call 604-534-7155 or email before you plan around them. See our Langley School District page for the wider district.
2. Upgrade for university or a program: KPU
KPU’s upgrading page lists English upgrading (for Adult Dogwood students, for work, or to meet KPU’s English requirement), math and science upgrading for program prerequisites or the Adult Dogwood, and English Language Studies for people learning English as an additional language. The page lists Langley among KPU’s campuses but does not say which campus runs which course, so ask the advisor. Adult Dogwood students who want a university-level course are told to book an appointment with an Upgrading Advisor. See KPU Langley campus for parking and getting there.
3. Learn to read and write better: a tutor, free of the classroom
KPU’s community programs page describes COOL, Community One-on-One Learning, where an adult is paired with a trained tutor for two hours a week in a public place in Langley, with lessons built around the learner’s goals. It also describes an eight-week Saturday program for a parent and a kindergarten-aged child, run with the Langley School District Foundation and the Fraser Valley Regional Library, where families receive a new book at each session. Both run through the Langley Literacy Network; the page gives email as the way to join and states no fee.
Is it free?
The Province says Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning are tuition-free for domestic students at 18 public post-secondary institutions in B.C., and that school districts offer free upgrading programs. It also describes an Adult Upgrading Grant that may cover tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation and unsubsidized childcare for eligible low-income students. Eligibility is set by each institution, so confirm with the one you choose. KPU’s upgrading page itself does not mention fees.
Where to start
Call or email one of the three above and ask for an advisor. The Province suggests meeting an academic advisor first to plan which courses and credits you need, and says upgrading credits can count toward the Adult Graduation Diploma.
