- The house-made soups and the freezer of pies
George’s is a neighbourhood butcher that also does a lot of the cooking for you. One side of the shop is a long counter of fresh cuts. The other side is freezers full of their own pies and meals, with tubs of house-made soup in between.
What to get
- Sausages made in-house, including English bangers and farmer’s sausage
- Soups, like split pea and ham, made in the shop
- Salmon pâté and other prepared dishes to take home
- Fresh cuts: steaks and roasts cut on site, beef ground daily, Johnston’s Fraser Valley pork and free-run chicken
- Freezer packs and individual frozen savoury pies (a personal chicken and vegetable pie was $6.79 when we checked)
The freezer packs are a good deal if you’ve got the space, and the current list is posted on their website.
Father to son
George had been a butcher since the 1970s when he opened the shop, which has been serving Walnut Grove since 1998. When he retired in 2009, his son Mark took over, and it’s still a family business. Reviewers tend to mention how good the meat is, how easy the prepared meals make a weeknight, and getting good advice at the counter on what to buy and how to cook it.
Hours
It’s open Monday to Saturday 9:30 to 6:30 and Sunday 10:30 to 6. Call 604-888-3436. Specials change, so check their site or Facebook before making a special trip for something.
