If you’ve got a kid in minor hockey, you’ve probably already been here. The Hockey Shop started in Surrey in 1988, when Rod and Ursula Bolivar opened it with their son Chad. Ken and Susan Whiddington bought into the business in 2000. In 2022 it moved into a 34,000-square-foot building on 66 Avenue, near Willowbrook. It carries the Source For Sports name because it buys through that group, but it’s still independently owned by the two families.
What’s inside
- A dedicated goalie department: pads, blockers, gloves and masks, with room to try them on
- Skates: fitting, sharpening and blade profiling (book a fitting appointment, or just walk in to shop)
- A shooting room where you can try a stick before you buy it
- Jerseys: stitched names, numbers and patches
- Team orders for apparel and equipment
There’s gear for every budget, from youth skates around $150 to top-end senior skates well over $1,000. Parents mostly mention being helped patiently through a first set of gear or a skate fitting, and goalies mention the selection.
Around the rink
Bauer named it Canadian Retailer of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2020. Each year it hosts TendyFest, a free goalie equipment demo day in Langley with a charity silent auction. Its THS Open golf tournament supported the Canucks Autism Network in 2025.
