Online or 604-532-5722. No doctor's referral needed

You don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist or a registered massage therapist in BC, and Twin Rinks puts that answer at the top of its FAQ. Phone the front desk or book online and you can skip the detour through your GP.

The clinic is inside the arena building on the Langley Bypass and has been since 1994, when physiotherapist Colleen Budy opened it. Arnout Stams joined as a partner in 2011. His bio says he was head physio for the Vancouver Whitecaps women’s program from 2001 to 2007, and hers mentions years of volunteering with hockey, football, dance and gymnastics teams. The team page lists physiotherapists, kinesiologists and a registered massage therapist working under one roof.

What they offer

  • Physiotherapy and manual therapy
  • IMS, intramuscular stimulation with fine acupuncture-style needles (they also call it dry needling)
  • Pelvic floor physiotherapy and women’s health
  • Vestibular rehab for dizziness and vertigo, including BPPV
  • Shockwave therapy, which they describe as an option for stubborn tendon problems such as plantar fasciitis
  • Sports injury rehab, plus rehab after knee and hip replacements
  • Registered massage therapy
  • Kinesiology: one-on-one exercise programs, coordinated through your physiotherapist

They say they belong to the ICBC recovery network and WorkSafeBC’s provider network. Their kinesiology page adds that ICBC claims typically cover active rehab in the first 12 weeks after a crash.

The first visit

An initial physio assessment can run up to 60 minutes, and follow-ups are usually 30 to 40. A first massage is 40 minutes; after that you can book 30, 40 or 60. Wear loose clothing so the sore area can be examined (gowns are on hand), and give them 24 hours’ notice if you can’t make it. They take Visa, Mastercard, Amex, debit and cash, and hand you a receipt for your extended health plan. The FAQ also points out that MSP Premium Assistance can partly fund physio and massage if you qualify.

The space

Their facility page shows a rehab gym with cable machines, bikes, a treadmill, exercise balls and bands, beside treatment rooms with adjustable plinths. The front desk also sells small items for home use, such as tape, electrodes, resistance bands, lacrosse balls and hot and cold packs.
