Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley matches young people with adult mentors in supported, one-to-one friendships. The agency’s own site says it has been doing this since 1974, and that it is part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, a federation of 102 member agencies serving more than 1,100 communities.
Which organisation is it?
We checked whether the name had changed. As of our check, the Langley agency’s own website and contact page still use the name Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley, with its office on Fraser Highway. A separate agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley, is based in Abbotsford (200 to 2445 West Railway Street, 604-852-3331) and its site doesn’t mention Langley. If you want to be sure which office serves you, phone the Langley number above.
What it does
The Langley site’s mission is to “enable life-changing mentoring relationships to ignite the power and potential of young people”. Its menus link to:
- Youth services and youth volunteer opportunities
- In-school mentoring
- A guide for families and mentors, with activity ideas and “Deals for Matches”
- A Holiday Hamper Program
- The 75 Doors campaign
- A Charity Shopping Night event
- Programs named Start Something, Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, and Game On! Eat Smart, Play Smart, Live Smart
The pages we could read don’t describe each program’s ages, dates or fees, so call or email for specifics.
Volunteering and enrolling a child
The site says it takes as little as an hour a week to help a child gain confidence. There is a volunteer inquiry link, plus an “Is mentoring for you?” page to read first. Families can use the site’s enrol-a-child page. Our wider volunteering guide lists other ways to help.
Donating and events
The agency’s events calendar is on its website. For other local causes and fundraisers, see charities and galas, and for things coming up, our events page.
