Volunteering in Langley

Want to give a few hours but not sure where? Langley has a lot of places that need hands, from the shelter dogs to the hospice residence. Here is where to start, with what each source says.

Langley Volunteer Bureau

The Bureau’s site describes it as a non-profit based in the City and Township that connects volunteers with local non-profits. It lists more than 5,800 volunteers, runs a Cards for Seniors program and supports community events. You can browse opportunities on better.app without logging in. To sign up, create a profile in the Better Community app, go back to the role you like, and register with that organisation. There’s a youth volunteering page and a list of remote, work-from-home options. Email [email protected], or write to PO Box 1181, Aldergrove, BC V4W 2V1. Non-profits can ask about membership or help building an event volunteer team.

The City and the Township

• The City of Langley’s volunteer page links to the Volunteer Bureau, the City’s Emergency Program and its advisory committees. Call 604-514-2800.
• The Township of Langley lists Adopt-a-Program (cleaning up a street, park, trail or creek), Recycling Ambassador, recreation and arts and culture roles, and Emergency Support Services. Recreation and arts volunteers must be at least 12, fill in an application and waiver, and email [email protected]. Phone 604-534-3211.

Health and care

• Langley Hospice Society: roles at the Supportive Programs Centre, the thrift store, with children and youth, and as client volunteers. Every role needs a police record check; client volunteers take a 12-week training and must be 19 or older. Phone 604-530-1115.

Seniors

The Langley Senior Resources Society lists roles in programs, greeting, the kitchen, office work, events, transportation and friendly visiting. The steps are an application, an interview, a criminal record check and references, and an orientation. Phone 604-530-3020.

Shelter, food and animals

• Gateway of Hope: ongoing roles at the Community Meal Centre, the Emergency Shelter and reception, plus events and the Christmas Kettle Campaign. Apply through the online portal on its volunteer page.
• LAPS: two-hour weekly shifts for six months or more, from dog walking to cat care. Ages 13 to 17 help with cats only, with a parent present.
• Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley: mentoring can start at an hour a week.
