John Beales was mayor of the Township of Langley from 1987 to 1993 and also served as a school trustee. He is remembered in the name of Beales Way at Langley Regional Airport.
Background
A Black Press report on the naming of Beales Way says he was a navigator on Lancaster bombers during the war and earned his pilot’s wings in his fifties, holding a licence for more than twenty years. It says he ran a steel manufacturing business in Fernridge and later operated Double J Aviation at the airport.
In office
The same report says he lost the 1984 mayoral race by about 50 votes, then won in 1987 and 1990, which fits the 1987 to 1993 years on Wikipedia’s list.
After office
Beales Way is a perimeter road at Langley Regional Airport running parallel to 56 Avenue, reached from 213A Street. The report says it honours his contributions to the airport, and quotes his son describing him as a vocal champion of it. The report says Beales died on June 30, 2003, at age 78. The article does not print its own year, so we have not dated the sign unveiling.
